The Wilds of Process

Process. It's where new discoveries can be found. But it's often the bit without a map – rewarding once you navigate through, but a little unknown.

When we were thinking about what we want to talk about for our second in-person Creative Cuppa event, we couldn't help but reflect on AI advancements and how that's changing the industry. Aside from the copyright question, a consequence we see remaining is the speed in which you can create visuals, and so we're reflecting on that middle part being squeezed – the process of creating. Arguably the gnarly and uncertain part, but where we feel the magic lies.

To explore this, three of our artists presented three equally engaging but different talks amidst the beautiful surrounds of Somerset House, along with live art in the room from James Dawe & Hannah Robinson

We discovered Vicki Turner's journey into permaculture and how that weaves into her process, we went behind the scenes with Owen Gildersleeve to embrace the unknown and welcomed the infectious energy of Supermundane and his Give It All You've Got manifesto.

Ravaging your past for forgotton treasure. Wilfully throwing yourself into the amateur. Making the unpredictable – that even you don't fully understand.

Vicki Turner kicked off the morning with a film made in collaboration with our in-house motion studio, visualising her journey through process and all of the things that feed into that. Her upbringing on Grandad's farm, journey through permaculture and the way she lives, bringing new life to what already exists. View the film

Owen Gildersleeve talked us through the way he works as an artist and the hidden process behind the scenes. Owen creates physical artwork made from paper. Whilst he’s come up with a process that allows for transparent collaboration, there’s a certain amount of trust involved to go from sketch to finished piece. It’s all about how he guides people through the process and embracing a few wildcard ideas.

Our final talk of the morning was from Rob Lowe, also known as Supermundane. Having worked in the creative industry since the early 90s – first, as a graphic designer at the cusp of the transition from analogue to digital – he’s seen a lot of change in the industry. As an artist, illustrator, poet and speaker, Rob has beenreflecting over his career, celebrating the joys of our industry and what it is to create, by crafting a manifesto – Give it All You've Got.

About Creative Cuppa

What began as a way to gain behind the scenes insights into our roster, in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, has evolved from an online talk series into in-person events, bringing people together and a great excuse to meet over a coffee and pastry.
