NEW MATTER

Welcome Future Makers!

We’re excited to reveal the illustrators who will make up this year's Future Makers. Please welcome Agnes Jonas, Hannah Robinson, Jill Tran and Prang Vipaluk!

Future Makers is our annual artist development programme now entering its 5th year. We had an extraordinary selection of applications and the wiley amongst you may notice that this year we have decided to take on 4 artists instead of our usual 3. It was very hard to choose and we enjoyed looking at all of the portfolios.

As part of our mission towards a more diverse illustration industry, Future Makers is open exclusively to illustration-based artists belonging to underrepresented groups, who are ready to take their next steps in the commercial illustration industry with the support of the Grand Matter team and artists.

As with all of our artists, Agnes, Hannah, Jill and Prang each bring with them their own unique artistic voice and style, as well as a creative curiosity to explore ideas and push their practice further. Over the next year we’ll be working closely together to help develop that, and perhaps even take on new commissions and opportunities. We’re excited for the year ahead

Her illustration work can be seen in beautifully printed magazines and newspapers, including Serviette magazine, The New York Times and the Washington Post to name a few.

My work is about finding a balance between contrasting ideas, represented by soft, flowing biomorphic shapes within an atmospheric weightless depth — like being in outer space or deep underwater.

Hannah Robinson

Hannah has a unique eye for narrative, bringing warmth and humour to her work with expressive linework and endearing characters. There is a distinct playfulness incorporating relatable details and eye catching compositions, sitting between the figurative and abstract.
With a strong grounding in editorial, collaborating with clients including The New York Times and The Guardian, Hannah is expanding her practice and applying her signature artistic voice to a range of projects and scales, from branding and packaging to large scale installations.

I’m interested in visual humour; how can I communicate a point whilst entertaining? That mentioned, I don’t like being too on the nose, so I’m always exploring how far I can take it.

I’ve always been drawn to the unspoken emotions that lie beneath the surface. Feelings that are quietly carried but rarely expressed.

I’m drawn to the process of finding balance between order and chaos – exploring how structured compositions can blend with bold geometric forms and unexpected colours to create compelling visual stories.
