Explaining early childhood brain science through animation for The Royal Foundation

The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood wanted to help practitioners explain the science behind shaping a child’s social and emotional development through nurturing interactions. Building on their 'Shaping Us' framework, the goal was to create a series of engaging films that could be used in training and practice nationwide, increasing understanding and improving outcomes for babies and young children.

We worked closely with the team to produce three animated films in collaboration with Plastic Horse and carefully selected illustrators, combining scientific insight with approachable visuals. Alec Doherty illustrated Noticing and Navigating Feelings, exploring attunement; Vicki Turner illustrated Supporting Early Learning, explaining scaffolding; and Owen Gildersleeve illustrated Creating Space for Connection, unpacking pacing. Each film uses clear, accessible storytelling to show how everyday moments of connection can have a long-term positive impact.

The films combined the expertise of leading child development professors and an advisory group of early years professionals with the creativity of our artists, ensuring both scientific accuracy and visual warmth. Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales was closely involved in the development of the films, spending time with two of the illustrators,Vicki Turner and Owen Gildersleeve, and the early years practitioners.

The series of films are now being built into training and practice across the UK, helping practitioners spark meaningful conversations with parents and carers.
