Putting craft in the spotlight to tell the story of The Balvenie's artful double-cask distilling process.

Scottish whisky brand, The Balvenie, wanted to tell the story of their prided double-cask distilling process and the role of their malt master in selecting the finest ingredients. To achieve this, paper artist Owen Gildersleeve was commissioned to bring their story to life with a series of intricate hand-made sets, capturing the brand’s craft-led values with warmth tactility.

We collaborated with Parisian studio, Parallel, to transform Owen’s handcrafted designs with CGI into an animation that connects the dots in The Balvenie’s process from grain to glass. Rich in texture and atmosphere, the film blends storytelling with craft, communicating the whisky’s heritage in an authentic and contemporary way.

With a unique coming together of the handcrafted and the digital, the result remains firmly anchored in Owen’s physical papercuts, which were used as direct reference for the CGI. The process was a true collaboration, with layered textures, lighting choices and digital sequences echoing the handmade aesthetic, ensuring the brand story felt grounded in real craft while elevated through motion.
