NEW MATTER

Live drawing with Hermès

To celebrate the release of the latest issue of Le Monde d’Hermès magazine, Lena Yokoyama and two of our Future Makers, Lily Kong and Jemima Muir, were invited by fashion label Hermès to spend a day mingling with guests drawing their portraits live, as part of a special 3 day long event in London's historic Soho Square.

Styled in iconic Hermès scarves and set against the specially designed kiosk, in the brand's signature orange, the artists had the opportunity to interact with scores of vistors and capture their likeness on paper, off the cuff, as a beautiful momento to take away.

As a unique mutual experience, the artists were able to step outside of their usual illustrative practice, make connections with visitors and work in new ways. Passers by could grab a free coffee and copy of the beautifully designed magazine, and take in the creative experiences of the day, which also included performance and bespoke poetry.

I particularly enjoyed interacting with fellow creatives or illustrators – someone even drew a portrait of me which was a lovely surprise! A highlight for me was drawing all the fun, playful outfits and accessories people had on.

I was doing a lot of improvised sketching in a much less scripted way, capturing people’s unique appearances in fleeting moments, while buying flowers or queuing for coffee. It was really rewarding to see how the act of drawing drew so many people in, curious to see what I was doing, which led to many many lovely conversations and new connections.

One of the biggest challenges from the event was definitely the queue. Portrait drawings were very popular on the day, and I drew like a machine! But now that I'm thinking about it, I'm glad I drew like a maniac 🦾. I feel more capable of drawing fast, cute and fun (hopefully)! I made 70+ drawings in 6 hours. Success!
