NEW MATTER

Welcome Future Makers!

We’re delighted to announce three up-and-coming artists joining Future Makers, our annual artist development programme now entering its 2nd year. Please welcome Jemima Muir, Lily Kong and Sofia Iva!

As part of our mission towards a more diverse illustration industry, Future Makers is open exclusively to illustration-based artists belonging to typically underrepresented groups, who are ready to take their next steps in the commercial illustration industry with the support of the Grand Matter team and artists.

As with all of our artists, Jemima, Lily and Sofia each bring with them their own unique artistic voice and style, as well as a creative curiosity to explore ideas and push their practice further. Over the next year we’ll be working closely together to help develop that, and perhaps even take on new commissions and opportunities. We’re excited for the year ahead

Jemima Muir

Jemima sums up her illustratice practice as "Playful, naive, free and fun!". She is interested in exploring nostalgia and feelings of childhood, envoking a sense of freedom and innocence.

Her illustrations feature whimsical characters and pattern-like backgrounds, exuding movement and energy through dynamic compositions and colourful palettes. As a multidisciplinary creative, she makes use of Caran D'ache wax pastels, Posca paint pens and ink brush pens, and loves to take the opportunity to draw out and about in nature. Lending itself to story telling, Jemima's work suits a wide variety of outputs from editorial pieces to packaging and branding.

I tend to not overthink my illustrations; I adore the freedom of not knowing what the final outcome will be.

Lily Kong

London-based illustrator Lily Kong seeks to "celebrate the joyful moments, and challenge others to find the humour in the loneliness and awkwardness in our daily lives".

She enjoys engaging with people through the exchange of stories, often mixing playful characters with bold text, exploring the heavier topics in life through relatable humour and meme-like observations. Clients include Ace & Tate, Buzzfeed and It's Nice That amongst others, and her work translates from on page to large scale outputs alike.

I take inspiration overhearing conversations in the cafe, or watching people’s behaviour on the street. I would note down all the funny bits and imagine what would happen afterwards.

Sofia Iva

Sofia is a multidisciplinary illustrator and animator based in Cyprus. Her delicate and refined hand crafted pieces are often inspired by nature, and invoke a sense of curiosity and imagination.

Many of her pieces are the result of travel, and exploring gardens around the world such as the greenhouses of London, Chiang Mai, Singapore and the Botanical Gardens of Georgia and Cyprus.  I like to combine the qualities of an artist, researcher, and observer. An illustration for me is a way to bring beauty to this world and connect through it.
